Bert and Betty are Boat People. They live and work on a narrowboat, carrying loads of coal, sand, iron, sugar, flour and anything else that needs to be transported along the canals between the South, the Midlands and the North of England.

Their narrowboat is called Bella; she is 70 feet long and 7 feet wide and is very beautiful with her name and brightly coloured roses and castles painted on her. Bella doesn't have an engine - instead, she is pulled along by a horse called Beauty, whose constant companion on the towpath is Bert and Betty's dog, Ben.

The Bert & Betty books are about the boat people who worked and lived on England's canals in the 19th century.

"Spring Morning" is the first book of the series, which includes "Stop Thief!" and "Betty's Birthday".

The companion picture dictionary "Waterways Words" illustrates and explains the boating terms used in the stories.
